About Sumner
Sumner was settled in 1849 by work crews building the road to Lyttelton, and takes its name from John Sumner, Archbishop of Canterbury. Cave Rock, a volcanic lava formation on the beach, is a well known landmark, and the suburb has been linked to the city by tram since 1888.
